The Royal Oak Paley Street is a Michelin star pub run by Nick Parkinson, who initially started the reinvention of the pub with his father, Sir Michael Parkinson. The head chef is Craig Johnstone who, at 21, was the youngest-ever winner in 2017 of BBC's Masterchef The Professionals, and in early 2018 the team hosted Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron for lunch. But most importantly, despite the fine-dining accolades, The Royal Oak is still a nice comfortable British country pub.
When we were first approached by the team, there wasn't much in the way of a website, and The Royal Oak needed a site that represented its growing ambitions and showed off the newly-renovated country pub. Lots of photographs of the building, the garden and above all the food needed to be shown off as much as possible. The style needed to strike a balance between pleasing pub and top restaurant.
After talking through ideas of style that reflect the pub and its atmosphere, we opted for a design inspired by a restaurant menu. We used a clear columnar layout that allowed a good arrangement of imagery and information. The navigation is clear and the site has plenty of scope for areas of interest, highlighting the latest news and social media posts, as well as making the food and wine menus easy to find. The current site has been live for some time now and continues to be popular with The Royal Oak, who use its CMS to update it frequently, and their visitors.
